Rivers PDP warns RSIEC against conducting planned Chairman polls

Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has told the state Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, that any attempt to proceed with the planned local government elections scheduled for May 23, amounts to an open disrespect to the court of competent jurisdiction which had ordered that status-quo-ante be maintained, adding that doing so would be futile.

In a statement, yesterday, chairman of the party in the state, Mr Felix Obuah, said that anything done to conduct the elections against the decision of the court which directed all parties to maintain status quo ante, would amount to a nullity.

PDP alleged that the Chairman and members of RSIEC, are card carrying members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and do not have the moral standing to conduct the council elections in the state.

It said the composition of RSIEC negates the principle of natural justice, urging the RSIEC to abide by the rule of nemo iudex in causa sua, which literally means that no person can judge a case in which he has vested interest.

The party queried the rationale in conducting elections that breached the provisions of the law.
According to him, “This deliberate disregard for the rule of law has vindicated the PDP’s position that Governor Amaechi and the APC are bent on causing crisis in the state.”
He urged member of PDP and the people of Rivers State to remain calm, noting that the planned council election will not stand.
