GMB’s victory-Lagos-Maiduguri bound trekker arrives Ilorin -

A 36 year old Lagos to Maiduguri bound trekker, Hassan Umar, in fulfilment of his promise over General Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in the last presidential election arrived Ilorin yesterday in continuation of his journey.

Umar had embarked on the long distance trip in fulfilment of his promise to cover the distance if the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari won the keenly contested poll.

Buhari is now president-elect and would be sworn in May 29.
The Borno State born trekker, like Suleiman Hassim who trekked from Lagos to Abuja to celebrate Buhari’s victory, commenced his journey May 1st.
Speaking in an interview in Ilorin, Umar told journalists that he started the journey in Lagos on Friday and arrived Ilorin on Monday night.

He noted that his decision was not to derive any material gain, but majorly to rejoice with the president-elect over his overwhelming victory.

The trekker, who has been working with a construction firm, Shelter Care Company, in Lagos since 2005, said he started living in Lagos in 2000.

Umar, who stressed that he voted at the same polling unit where vice-president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo cast his ballot in Lagos, challenged the youths to remain resolute in reshaping the affairs of the country.

His words, “What prompted me to embark on this journey is to challenge the youth of this country to see this as tourism. Because this is ever democracy we see in this country. One of my happiest ways is that the incoming president (Buhari) is actually for the masses. I think by now, it would be more good for this country to do things better.

“When you desire to do something, it is good to do it. I’m very happy for him (Buhari). He made us proud as youths. Because this new government, we hope, will empower the youths of Nigeria for us to know our way to be in democracy. So that is more happiness that we have. It is not only me that is doing this journey, others had done that.

“Others have their mission. For me, my own mission is that I want to do something very hard for people to ask me why I have done that. And I know that by May 29, everybody must have ended it. Even we did not gain anything at the end of the day, what we know is that we have achieved something with this trek”.
